MAKING INFRASTRUCTURE: LINE OF PRODUCTION AND CARE IN FREETOWN
The project proposes the founding of a timber construction cooperative along the Samba
Gutter in Freetown, that focuses on training and developing skills for the use of timber in
the building industry. The scheme makes use of an existing five-store structure on the
site and introduces a long timber workshop and classroom next to the waterway,
providing the existing carpenters within the neighbourhood access to large, shared
spaces for making and learning. A yard space formed between the two buildings
connects to the public walkway that runs beside the gutter, allowing for an overlap of
people and use, and opens the site to the city.
